How can I tell if my brakes need servicing?

Brake Pads

Your pads are the most basic element of the brake system and are typically the first item that needs changing. Brake pads have a lifespan that ranges from 25,000 to 70,000 miles, which varies depending on your driving habits. When you start to hear a squealing or scraping noise, it means that your pads are almost worn down completely. This noise occurs because there are tiny metal hairs at the bottom of the pads that serve as a warning sign to the driver that your pads are about to wear out completely.

Brake Rotors

The next thing you'll want to get examined is your brake rotors. As you drive, your rotors will wear down, much like your pads. This wear down comes from the pressure exerted by the pads as you press down on the brake pedal. Grooves will begin to appear in the rotor, as will dust and grit from the pads, meaning it's time to get them replaced.

Brake Shoes

The brake shoes are the third aspect of your brake system that you'll want to keep an eye on. In particular, the rear brake shoes control the parking brake, which while it's not used as frequently as your regular brakes, is important to upkeep. You'll notice that it's time to swap out your brake shoes when your parking brake becomes loose or if you feel that your brake pedal isn't as sensitive as before.

Other Things to Look Out For

There are several other warning signs to keep track of when driving around Salem OH or New Castle PA.

  • If your vehicle begins to pull to one side or you notice that your steering wheel or brake pedals shake when you apply the brakes, these are telltale signs that you need service.
  • You can get ahead of any potential major issues if your Anti-Lock Brake System warning lights activate.
